Trip Overview Upper Mustang Treks
Upper Mustang Treks is a journey to the cryptic rain shadow region of Mustang which shelters the ancient Buddhist kingdom of Mustang- Lo. Mustang which is a fortified city positioned atop Kaligandaki River in the rain shadow of the Himalayas gets nominal rainfall which makes the entire topography dry but this very same reason makes Upper Mustang Treks possible even in Monsoon season.
The route for Upper Mustang Treks proceeds through the barren landscape of eroded sandstone columns and take us through wild experiences of rare natural and manmade marvels which comprises of visiting Thousand years old monastery of Gyokar Gompa, viewing the fortified wall, visiting the four storey palace in Lomanthang, passing through caves, meeting Native tribes called Lobos and having 180 degree views of Nilgiri, Annapurna and Dhawalagiri Mountains and getting encircled by more than 35 mountains over 6000m high.
Upper Mustang Treks proceeds through as diverse path as world’s deepest gorge in Kali Gandaki to world’s highest regions of Lo- Manthang Valley. Upper Mustang Trek is a Restricted Area Trek and requires a special permit from department of immigration to travel through.

Day 01: Kathmandu Arrival:
Our representatives from Adventure Himalayan Travels will pick you up in Tribhuvan International Airport at Kathmandu and entrust you to the hotel where you will be briefly explained about your trekking package. Welcome dinner will be organized in the evening amid Nepalese Cultural Program.
Day 02: Sightseeing in Kathmandu:
Second day covers the full day excursion of the cultural heritages existing in Kathmandu Valley. The tour encompasses the Pashupatinath Temple Complex enlisted in World Heritage; The Monkey Temple also known as Swayamvunath; The Bauddhanath Stupa and Durbar squares of Kathmandu, Patan(City of fine Arts) and Bhaktapur(City of Devotees).
Day 03: Fly or drive to Pokhara:
A brief flight of scarcely 25 minutes from Kathmandu to Pokhara along the Manaslu Mountain should be able to take us to Pokhara. Alternatively, we can take a 5 hrs long drive via Prithvi Highway that offers a glimpse of the countryside of Nepal with its verdant forest, roaring rivers, multi-ethnic settlements, organic farms and elegant snow- clad mountains which eventually will lead us to the cheerful Lake City of Pokhara where plethora of outdoor adventure awaits impatiently- boating, para gliding, sunset viewing, exploration of cave, watching david’s fall and visiting World Peace Stupa to name some.
Day0 4: Fly to Jomsom and Trek to Kagbeni:
A laconic flight of mere 20minutes will lead us to Jomsom-the hub and a district Headquarter of Mustang that links Nepal with Tibet through Ancient Salt Trade Route. The flight though fleeting will be a memorable one as it offers the views of Mountains including Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. Upper Mustang Trek initiates from Jomsom. We will move forward along the Kaligandaki River and transverse Ekley Bhatti Village before continuing on the way that allows the 180 degree views of Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, Dhampus and Tukuche and then lower down to Kagbeni-a Tibetan village located at the edge of two rivers.
Day 05: Trek to Chele:
The trail proceeds further through the eastern edge of Kaligandaki River and clambers uphill towards Tangbe Village. Following the tapered alleys amid the houses and fields of apples and wheat, we will arrive at pretty Chhusang Village. Later we will cross the Kaligandaki River on a steel footbridge and climb the hill upward to the village of Chele which is located on a ridge above the gorge at an altitude of 3050m.
Day 06: Trek to Syangboche:
The trail follows the inclined and arid landscape before lowering down the hill. We will clamber Taklam La Pass (3624m) which allows the panoramic view of Tilicho Peak and Damodar Danda. Later the route spirals down through chortens to Samar Village from where the trail falls further to a large ravine. Another 3 hours of walk through stream and juniper trees will take us through Ramchung Cave to Syangboche.
Day 07: Trek to Ghami:
Today’s trek proceeds through Tibetan styled local houses, tea houses and chorten all the way to the Yamda La. Allocating some time to praise the scenic beauties the apex offers, we will move along the fields of Barley to climb the Nyi Pass at 4010m altitude which is the second pass for the day. A steep descend from Nyi Pass will take us to Ghami which is the third largest village in Lo Region that nestles amid rugged mountains.
Day 08: Trek to Charang:
The trek on the 8th day of Upper Mustang Trek commences by crossing the Ghami River. The route then stretches through Mani walls and heads east through maize fields and willow trees to Charang Village(3500m) which exists at the top of Tsarang Chu Canyon and is inhabited mostly by Lobos- the natives. Enroute, we will visit the huge five-storey white Dzong and red Gompa situated at the bank of gorge Kali Gandaki River.
Day09: Trek to Lo- Manthang:
After a gentle drop from Charang, we willcross the Charang-Chu and climb uphill through rocky path all the way to a piled up stones that offers the first look into walled city of Lo-Manthang along with views of Nilgiri, Tilicho, Annapurna I and Bhrikiuti Peak. Later we will move up and down the hill through another plateau to reach Lo-Manthang where we will spend the night.
Day 10: Rest day in Lo-Manthang:
Today we will take a well deserved rest from our toilsome trek and pull ourselves up for the upcoming trek. We will explore around Lo- Manthang which includes visit into the western valley of Tingkhar where the summer palace of the Raja resides. The place offers majestic views of Kimling, Phuwa and the Namgyal Gompa. Later we will visit Namgyal Gompa- a monastery- cum- local court.
Day 11: Trek to Drakmar:
Following the route that pass along the Wish fulfiller-Gyokar Gompa, we will climb up through a ridge across a valley to arrive to a meadow. Gyokar Gompa is famous for its rock painting and is believed to be more than 1200 years old. We will have a gentle drop and continue along the eroded path to make it to Drakmar(3810m).
Day 12: Trek to Ghiling:
We will move on through dusty and windy road to Ghiling located at 3806m altitude which though is barren and seems god forsaken land is worth visiting for the views of Mount Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri it offers.
Day 13: Trek to Chhuksang:
A 5hour walk through rocky path down the hill with spectacular views of mountains at the backdrop will take us to Chhuksang where we will enjoy the terraced field and the spectacular mountain views. We will stay overnight in Chhuksang.
Day 14: Trek to Kagbeni and to Jomsom:
Early in the morning we will set out for our last day trekking for Upper Mustang Treks. We will follow the easy trail to the southern border of the region and head along Kagbeni. From Kagbeni, we will continue along the Annapurna Circuit Trek and walk along the bank of Kali Gandaki River to make it to Jomsom where we will stay overnight.
Day 15: Fly back to Pokhara:
The20 minutes flight from Jomsom Airport through the cleft between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri will take us to Pokhara. There will be enough time spare to unlock the mysteries of Pokhara. In the evening, we will stay overnight at one of the hotels in lakeside.
Day 16: Drive or take a flight back to Kathmandu:
Both modes of travel- via air and road are available. It takes 25-minute flight through scenic mountain views or 6 hours bus tour of 200km long road to make it to Kathmandu. We will return to our hotel where you will enjoy the Nepali dish amid the cultural show.
Day 17: Departure:
17th day concludes Upper Mustang Treks. Our representative will assist you in last moment preparation and will drive you back to Airport from where you will return to your beloved ones. We hope to see you again. Farewell!!!
